September 2008 - BUAN in conjunction with The Greenbox, www.greenbox.ie, ran a series of 'Sustainability and You!' workshops as part of an environmental awareness week. These are the first in a series of workshops which concentrate on the global perspective, sustainability issues and local initiatives.
July 2008 - Sustainability Bites launched
June 2008 - An article by David Whelan entitled, The True Cost of the Humble Spud, examining issues such as food miles, energy and consumption habits was recently published in the June edition of Sustainability Vol. 3. It’s also about finding the best methods to manage those resources for current and future populations. The Iroquois Indians in North America considered all new tribal decisions with the seventh generation in mind. Topic - The Future of Litter: From ‘Emerald Isle’ to ‘Destination Detritus’….. the roads into and out of most Irish towns and villages now lie strewn with soda cans, food wrappers, plastic bottles and the like. It can take hundreds of years for certain types of plastics for example to degrade in the natural environment so as the commonest of all litter we see, it is going to be an eye sore for many generations to come. Public service advertisements call out to the conscience of miscreants to desist from the practice, and penalties are meant to discourage people from fouling up our hedgerows and streets, but nothing seems to work. Topic - The True Cost of the Humble Spud (Originally published in 2008): It’s 2008, The International Year of the Potato and the year Ireland has signed up to a 20% cut in carbon emissions by 2020. Some would say that this might not be enough and perhaps it is time for individuals to understand a little more about the connection between what we eat and the impact that has on the climate.
